Natural Home Remedy Tried and tested : Medicinal Benefit of Assam Jawa / Tamarind

I was down and out with a cold and fever last weekend, I couldn’t even move a limb and I was feeling so dizzy and tired. I can feel my temperature is not that high but it was there and I wasn’t going away though I tried to cover myself up with a blanket and just tried to sweat it all up. Orang melayu will call it ‘kebah’ demam because when you sweat your fever will eventually go away. I was taking panadol and clarinase to ease up the pain.

And so there I was sleeping myself away for literally two whole days. Woke up just to get some sustenance, go toilet or drink water. On Sunday evening at about 5pm ish I was like bored already of sleeping and feeling dizzy I went downstairs to have my lunch, I remembered a tip from my grandmother to use assam jawa as a cure to lower the body temperature. I remember one time when I was small, I had the most horrible fever ever and my temperature was just high, my grandmother made some air assam jawa (complete with the putty) ask me to drink some and put it on my head all over my head. I remember feeling better bit by bit after that.

So I asked the maid to make me some air assam jawa and true enough my temperature started to lower and I was feeling a bit better I can get up, shower and watch tv. Natural home remedy truly works! So here’s the tip: Take some assam jawa used for cooking and just add water. It’s really really sour and I mean really really sour so you can add a bit of sugar or honey to make it easier on the palate. For me I can just drink it like that without any added sugar or honey. Take 2-3 times a day and see for yourself. I can bet you that you will feel better in no time.

Assam jawa or tamarind paste is the key ingredient in many malay dishes. It is usually sold in packets or in slabs in the supermarket. Apparently tamarind juice is a good source of vitamin C, vitamin B, iron, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin and antioxidants.

One of the many benefits of tamarind includes fighting against vitamin C deficiency and helping in reducing fever while fighting against cold infections. The ingredients in tamarind can also help in lowering blood cholesterol and promoting a healthy heart. Tamarind juice can be gargeld to relieve sore throat and throat infections. As tamarind is rich in vitamin C, it can also be used to prevent scurvy and as an antiscorbutic agent.

So before you start on any antibiotic regime, you may want to consider giving air assam jawa a try whenever you feel a fever or cold coming :)

The journey to serenity

Glass-like water glistening in serenity
Like a mirror to the bright blue sky

Gentle breeze and aquarium under my feet
Stars sprinkled like diamonds at night

The smell of the sea is inviting
The sound of gentle waves lapping

When the sun is shining
Far from land my heart sings

Looking at the horizon
It’s like the earth has no end

The smile in the sky

A smile with a twinkling eye
Against the dark cobalt sky
Beaming down with a silvery moonlight
Left eye Venus
Right eye Jupiter
A cheeky secret of the world
A rare exposure of cosmic allure

A smile with a twinkling eye
Against the dark cobalt sky
My heart stutters when I try to think straight
Who is peaking?
Who is winking?
A dark romance, that twilight saga
A wishful thinking in cosmic reality

A ghost in my head

You stand in the darkness
You are there in the light
You keep appearing for no reason

You are nowhere when I look for you
You are everywhere when Im not looking
You are like a ghost in my head

I see you when im awake
I see you when im asleep
In the morning, in the still of the night

Every second, every minute
Every hour, every day
You are like a ghost in my head

What am I thinking?
Who am I fooling?
Why am I tumbling and sinking?

I need to think up straight
I need to swim to the surface
I need to get this ghost out of my head

Beauty product tried and tested: Revlon Grow Luscious by Fabulash

Have you ever dreamed of having beautiful, long black lashes? Revlon’s new range of mascara, Grow Luscious by Fabulash is really fantastic! Revlon claims that it is a multi-benefit mascara and lash enhancer that gives instantly longer and fuller lashes while helping them to grow stronger with each use. The mascara is available in regular or waterproof and comes in the shade of Blackest Black, uses a patented formula of unique fibers and phytopeptide complex to help condition and strengthen lashes, complimenting the natural growth cycle by helping to prevent premature breakage. Also, it comes with an oversized brush, and it’s only priced at RM33.

I don’t really have short or sparse lashes but at one time my lashes were falling off and breaking prematurely leaving a bit of a patch on my eyelid where the lash is suppose to be and some of it became shorter. Maybe because of my diet or daily use of mascara and rubbing it off with make up remover but I can never live without mascara and eyeliner. Period. I’ve tried an eyelash serum before – KJI & Co Emergency Lash RX. It worked as good but I always forgot to put it on before I put on my mascara and ended up not using it as often as I should. It’s also a bit pricey compared to Revlon’s.

So when I saw this new Grow Luscious by Fabulash I decided to give it a try since I don’t have to do any extra step and it would be just like putting on mascara daily. Convenient enough isn’t it? Although it is not as black as Majolica Majorca’s mascara or other brands, it does help my lashes to look fuller and lusher. Also, I found that my lash is stronger than before. It has been about a month of using the mascara now and I love it! People were asking me whether I am wearing fake lashes and when I said im not they were truly amazed. So give it a try peeps, it might suit you too! I am truly a satisfied buyer of the product J

Nestle Fitnesse 14 days Challenge: Part II

And so I am already half way through the challenge. . had a mixed feeling after completing the first seven day of the diet..I wasnt exercising on the first few days and i was always hungry all the time i ate  at least 5 servings of fruits everyday! I also ate yogurt and mixed vegetables which includes bits of chicken or seafood. But still, i was hungry all the time! The temptation to snack was so great  when i saw those cookies on the counter. dammitt ..and the tempation to give up was so severe and one point made me want to lose control but i persevered and stayed tough.   I didnt take any sugar and totally stopped snacking. I thought this diet is going to be a failure  when i weighed myself on Day 8 but guess what, i really did lose 1kg  when i weighed again on Day 10! :D

Feeling somewhat elated with my achievement i was a bit more motivated to persevere for another week and exercise more. So here goes Part II of my journey of the Nestle Fitnesse 14 day challenge.
Let us continue on where i have left off which is....

Day 8:
I weighed myself today but no decrease in weight yet :( What a disappointment but I  still want to continue and finish the challenge. Again woke up late on Sunday so had lunch of half plate nasi goreng with fried egg. Dinner was cereal with fruits and had 3 pieces of fried yong tow foo. Exercised for 45 minutes on the treadmill and bicycle.

Day 9:
Monday oh Monday..feeling a bit sleepy today so I decided to munch on the cereal instead rather than eating with milk and downed a bottle of magnolia Good Morning milk. Ate two types of fruits. Lunch was a plate of char kuey tiow. Dinner was cereal with milk and two spoonful of rice mixed with small pieces of chicken and vegetable in soya sauce. I also continued to exercise for about 30 minutes on the treadmill, did three reps of 10 push-ups and leg ups.

Day 10:
Five more days to go on the diet and I will be done by the end of this week.  Didnt get to do any exercise today apart from the usual morning routine and walked at least 4 blocks  from office during lunch. Breakfast: Again munched the cereal and then had a bottle of magnolia Good Morning milk. Ate three types of fruits. Lunch: Had rice with ikan pari assam, egg and vegetable. A balanced  meal i would say. Dinner: A bowl of cereal with milk and a bowl of vegetable with slices of chicken and seafood in soup.  I weighed myself again today and to my surprise i lost 1kg already! Im so happy with myself so im going to continue with my exercise routine tomorrow. for a trimmer me :)

Day 11:
Its wednesday and i thought Monday blues was over but i couldnt sleep properly last night  so today is a no mood day. haha Went back home to sleep during lunch so i wouldnt have to  mingle with anyone in this dazed mood. Breakfast is the usual combination of cereal and fruits.  Since i slept during lunch, i decided to have cereal with milk and a bowl of mixed veggies. Dinner was  a plate of rice with fish and ulam. Went for a  jog around the neighbourhood for half an hour  after work and  again did 3 sets of ten push ups and leg ups.

Day 12:
I cant wait to get off this diet already.  Its getting a bit mundane to eat cereal twice a day  but i have only 2 more days to go so i am just holding on..  Today breakfast as usual. Lunch was a plate of char keuytiow and shared banana fritters dessert. Dinner was  cereal with mlik and a bowl of mixed fried veggies. Didnt get to do any exercise today as i was hanging out at my friends place.

Day 13:
Yayyyyy second last day on the diet!  I am literally counting the days to have normal food again. To me breakfast with cereal in the morning is alright but the hardest bit was to eat it for lunch or dinner. Today was such a nice day and i woke up very refreshed.  and its Friday again!  Happy Friday! Cant wait for the weekends :)  started the day with the usual  breakfast routine.  Had an italian buffet for lunch but cant eat that much anymore. Dinner was cereal with milk and fruits. Exercise for about 40 minutes jogging around the neighbourhood.

Day 14
I've finally come to the last day of the diet and it was really challenging as i had an open house in the afternoon and engagement do in the evening.. Only  managed to eat cereal with milk in the morning and then after that was a whole lot of food - nasi with kari ikan and sambal sotong, fried meehun with sambal, agar2 santan, apple pie, mee tomato, red velvet cake, nasi minyak, tapioca pudding and merengues! Food galore haha! :D
I managed to exercise on the bycicle for 40 minutes in the morning and then 40 minutes of swimming in the afternoon after eating the nasi.  All in all weight loss is only 1kg for the 14 day diet and BMI improved from 23.8 to about 23.3.Feeling a tad guilty i decided to continue on Sunday  with the cereal diet and then im done! woohoo! :)

So, in conclusion:

start weight: 55kg
end weight : 54kg

start BMI: 23.8
end BMI: 23.3

A slight improvement but i do feel a bit healthier. I think 1kg a week is a fair enough weight to lose if not it will be like a crash diet isnt it? But i gotta say that this diet is really difficult as it made me hungry all the time and its not that filling so sometimes like dizzy dizzy you know..From my experience, i dont think anyone can lose more than 1kg in 2 weeks time unless they go on a crash diet and go hungry all the time. If you see the sample they put in the website apparently this woman lost 3kgs in 2 weeks! i dont know if i can believe that but i've tried and tested and this is the result that i got.

Anyways, on a more positive note, i shall keep on my daily routine of not using the lift and climbing the stairs everyday and exercise at least 40 minutes a day. Also, eating fruits in the morning is really refreshing so apart from eliminating cereal from two of my main meal (im still having cereal for breakfast) everything else shall remain as it is. Let's live a healthier life everyone! :)

NESTLE FITNESSE 14 Day Challenge: Part I

As i was getting ready to go out on a saturday afternoon for lunch, i stepped on the scale to weigh myself as my clothes has been feeling a bit tight these days. True enough my weight stands at 55kg and that means my BMI is 23.8! Slightly more than the optimum BMI for asian women which should be around 23 and below. My ideal weight would be around 50 to 52kg and the last time my weight hit 55kg was way back in 2007. And so, i saw this Nestle Fitnesse 14 day challenge and went to the supermarket straight away and bought 3 big boxes for the 14 day challenge.

This program expects you to replace two meals a day with a bow of nestle fitnesse cereal with skimmed milk and a piece of fruit. Breakfast should be easy but lunch or dinner can be a bit tough. However, you can also vary the food intake ie. you can add on a glass of chocolate milk, a small tub of yoghurt, a bowl of vegetables, more fruits or maybe toss in  a scramble egg so you would not get so hungry on the diet. Remember, this is not about starving yourself but selecting healthy low calory food and not skimp on nutrients.

I have also registered myself for The Star online Shape Up Your Lifestyle 14 Day Challenge. The contest is running from 1 December 2010 to 28 December 2010. Contestants are to go on the recommended cereal diet and record a daily diary of  food intake and activities during the 14 days challenge in less than 150 words. Click on the link below to know more about the contest:

http://contests.thestar.com.my/nestle_fitnesse_14days/default.asp

The blog will record exactly what i submitted for the contest so follow me on my 14 days journey to drop a jeans size and wish me luck! :)

Day 1: Sunday, 5 Dec 2010
Today is the start of my 14 day program. Since i had a really late night last night and just recovered from flu the day before, it was not that exciting to eat only cereals for two meals. Breakfast: a bowl of cereal with milk, a glass of strawberry milk and a piece of fruit. Lunch: a half serving of nasi goreng pattaya with stir fried vegetable and a glass of orange juice. A piece of chicken bun for afternoon snack. Dinner: a bowl of cereal with milk and a plate of sotong kangkung. No exercise today as i am still feeling a bit tired.

Day 2:
Still feeling under the weather as i march on in day 2. No exercise today as i was too drowsy from all the medication and slept almost the whole day. Breakfast: A bowl of cereal with chocolate milk and a piece of fruit.Lunch: Half a portion of rice with vegetables, fried fish and oxtail soup. Dinner: A bowl of cereal with milk and a bowl of long beans and carrots sauteed with garlic and soy sauce.

Day 3:
Day 3 looked more promising as i  was feeling  better and  managed to slot in a half an hour  of brisk walking on the treadmill which burns about 100 calories. Breakfast: A bowl of cereal with milk ,an apple, a piece of papaya and  a small tub of yoghurt. Lunch: Rice with fried fish, curry ,and  ulam.  Half a chocolate croissant for afternoon snack. Dinner: A bowl of cereal with milk and  salad with 2 pieces of grilled small prawns, a piece of grilled fish cutlet and small  beef cubes.

Day 4:
Its a working day today and i am back in the office.  Started  the day with walking as i park my car two blocks away from the office.  As part of my exercise plan, no more taking the  lift from today onwards so i took the stairs instead from ground floor to level 3. During lunch i walked about 3 blocks away from my office to Pavillion  to have lunch and walked back to office. Wow, l love it that i do alot of walking today :)  My food diary for today- Breakfast as usual with cereal and two pieces of fruits. Lunch:  half a serving of fried rice with chicken , a small bowl of tomyam soup and mango salad. Ate two more pieces of fruits for afternoon snack to keep me full until dinner. Dinner: I had to improvise as i had to eat dinner with the family. I ended up with a quarter  piece of murtabak, a piece of fruit and half a bowl of cereal with milk.

Day 5:
I continued on with my walking and stairs climbing routine. Today was quite a challenge as it is my mom’s birthday and we went out for dinner. I had Japanese food for lunch and my mom wanted to have Japanese for dinner as well. So I had to eat Japanese food twice today haha :p Breakfast: The usual cereal with milk, two pieces of fruits and a small bottle of magnolia good morning milk. Lunch: Half a bowl of rice topped with crab omelette and gravy, 4 pieces of salmon sushi and green tea. Dinner: Some sashimi, beef tataki, a soft shell crab hand roll and a spider maki. I think dinner was quite healthy because I ate mostly protein and tried to skimp on the rice.

Day 6:
It’s Friday and I can smell the weekends already!  :) Oh I missed out something in the calendar yesterday – I actually managed to slot in a 40 minutes running on the treadmill before dinner and that was a good progress. Sticking on to my usual workday routine today, breakfast was the usual. I managed to go the gym during lunch for a 45 minutes workout. Lunch was a bowl of cereal and milk again because I was too lazy to look for food..Dinner was half a serving of nasi pattaya and beef paprik.

Day 7:

It was Saturday and I woke up late. So had lunch half a plate of fried kueytiow. Ate lots of fruits. Since lunch was late I had an early dinner at about 7pm with a bowl of cereal. I went out to hang out with friends and it was really tough as there was food around and I was feeling a bit more hungry than usual. So I had toast and egg around 9pm and supper of capati with a piece of tandoori chicken at 3am to satisfy my grumbling stomache. Since I did not have breakfast, I think the calories I took for the day was still alright. I also managed to exercise for about 40 minutes on the bicycle.

To be continued so stay tuned...............

A winning entry :)

I stumbled across a website last week called the Receipt Stories and thought it was rather interesting. I can’t really remember where I read about it but I decided to submit two short story entries anyway. Basically in Receipt Stories, you can share any of your short stories, poem or haiku provided that it is not more than 100 words. You can send in as many entries as you want and if you are lucky, you will be picked as one of the winning stories.

To my surprise, I received an email yesterday from receipt stories @ book Xcess congratulating me that one of my entries has been selected as one of the winners in the 7th round of their short stories campaign. Selected winners will receive a RM20 vouchers (valid until 31st Jan 2011), Pandanus Bookmark and Bookxcess Bookmark Autumn Edition.

And, the best part is - the stories will be printed on the receipts for 14 days from 6th Dec 2010 to 19th Dec 2010! So, if you ever go to buy books at bookXcess on those dates, keep a lookout on the receipts alright J It would look like this..

Yup, that’s my story alright with the title ‘more than words’. It's a bit small to read over here so i suggest you to click on the link below to read more of the story:

http://bookxcessblog.com/

This would be the first time in my life that my work has ever been published! J ‘More than words’ is actually an excerpt of my blog that I wrote back in 2008. If you could go back to the archive in November 2008, the piece is called ‘Contrary niceties’. You can read the rest of the post after the excerpt so you would understand the whole piece.

Personally, I think this is an excellent campaign from BookXcess. Apart from promoting its books and stores, this campaign aims to encourage Malaysians to read and write. You will be surprised of the many entries where people always have something to write and to express themselves.

I’ve always had a dream to publish my work and Receipt Stories definitely give a good kick start of confidence and encouragement. Even though it is just on a receipt, I’m still proud of myself. Maybe I shouldn’t give up on my dream yet ;)

So, do join in the fun either by writing in an entry or reading the posted entries J

Jailbird

Okay so here goes the story of five friends who made it for dinner on a cool Wednesday night at The Pink Sage in Solaris Dutamas. For a start, everyone was late due to: 1) unbelievably absurd traffic congestion in Ampang 2) one who decided to leave a bit later 3) an extra hour of exercise time to make room for a heavy meal, and 4) work commitment allowing her to leave only at around 2000 hour (note the military style timing). We were supposed to meet at around 8.15 ish but everyone turned up after 9pm J The usual Malaysian timing I guess except for miss #catty1 who is always on time J

After a few minutes hanging at the curb trying to decide where to eat, we decided to head up to The Pink Sage. The pancake was comfortingly awesome. Its beef tacos, spagetti and quasadellas were very tasty and the crust of its Banoffee pie is interestingly yummy. After an hour and plus of gossiping on bloggers, eating all the food, commenting on Katy Perry’s Peacock song and laughing our head off, we decided to have a drink at the nearby mamak for a bit.
As the clock hits 11pm we decided to call it a night and went on to find our respective cars parked by the side of the road for convenience purposes. Mind you the cars were not obstructing traffic at all but it was all parked on the yellow line. To my horror, my car, which would be the easiest one to spot, was nowhere to be found! I was like ‘ hey I parked it here! I did! I remember!’ Another friend of mine, lets just call her #catty2 for now, was about to go to her car when she realized that her car was not there anymore as well. She was parked a few cars in front of mine. And then another friend, #catty3, called from the other end and her car was gone as well. It all dawned upon us that it cannot be stolen it must have been towed! True enough after frantically browsing on the Blackberry for DBKL number and a few rounds of getting the wrong department ( we got Flood department as well ok ) we got the car depot number in Jinjang Utara.
Since one of us parked inside that night, her car was the only one saved. So miss #catty4 drove to the depot since #catty3 needed to get some important stuff from her car for work the next day. So here’s the pic for our cars…in jail! We had to wait for the next day to bail them out because the abang said ‘counter dah tutup pukul 10’… but they towed our cars at around 10pm!!! Talk about DBKL and tow trucks trying to make money.

So in conclusion,

Dinner at the pink sage : rm25 ++
Quality dinner time w gfs: priceless
Visit car jail: superbbb priceless
Bailout money: rm210……..after discount…….DBKL sucks..

I think we’ve all learnt our lesson not to park illegally anymore, anywhere and anytime. You will never know when the DBKL will come towing..haha. So guys, please be mindful when you want to park by the side of the road even for just a while..

* Please not that all my friends will be called catty to conceal their identity, hence the blurred faces since the Cat would like to remain an enigma for nowJ
